Carmiano (Carmianu in Salento dialect) is an Italian municipality of inhabitants of the province of Lecce in Puglia. It is located in Salento, in the northern territory of the province of Lecce. It falls within the Negroamaro Park and is 11 km from the provincial capital to the west. The origins of Carmiano are uncertain. According to some, its name derives from the carmine red color of the area. According to other historians, including De Giorgi, Marciano, Arditi, Coco and Galateo, it can all be traced back to the Roman centurion Carminius, to whom the Roman Senate donated 100 acres of land in what was then Calabria (the current Salento), and after the death of the centurion his lands, inhabited by his successors and a large group of faithful, took the name of Presidium Carmianensis or Carminianum and with the subsequent popularization therefore.
